Are you a patient in the Málaga region and would you like a diabetic retinopathy screening? Here is what you need to know.

What is a DR screening?

A diabetic retinopathy screening is a non-invasive, painless procedure that takes 10–15 minutes. A trained screener takes photographs of both eyes using a fundus camera. The images are then graded by AI and reviewed by a certified ophthalmologist. You will receive your results within a few days.

Who should be screened?

All patients with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) should have an annual retinal screening. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is critical to preventing vision loss.

What to expect

  • The screening takes place at a participating clinic or community center.
  • Eye drops to dilate the pupils may be necessary (this causes temporary blurred vision, so you should not drive immediately after).
  • The images are graded by our AI and reviewed by an accredited ophthalmologist.
  • Your results - including severity grade and recommended follow-up - are available through the Patient Portal.

Pilot phase

During the pilot phase, screenings in the Málaga region are provided free of charge. Screening locations will be announced as the pilot progresses.

This is not a medical emergency service. If you are experiencing sudden vision loss, please visit your nearest emergency room immediately.
